What is LAB?
Linear alkyl benzene is a compound that comprises a benzene ring and a linear alkyl group attached to it. Linear alkyl benzene belongs to the group of aromatic hydrocarbons.
Linear alkyl benzene is used to produce alkyl benzene sulfonate (LAS). This detergent is a biodegradable detergent. LAS replaced branched dodecylbenzene sulfonates in detergents due to its slow decomposition rate. Linear alkyl benzene in downstream industries first reacts with sulfuric acid to convert to alkyl benzene acid (LAS) sulfonic acid and then reacts with caustic soda to produce sodium alkyl benzene sulfonate. With the addition of a series of other additives, this material will eventually reach the consumer as a dishwashing liquid and washing powder.
